4 natural fertilizers for tomatoes during fruit setting

June or July are the months when fruits are set on tomatoes. During this period, the plants need feeding. Quite often it turns out in practice that not all purchased fertilizers are good, even experienced gardeners resort to folk methods of feeding tomatoes.

Dry ash

Ash is something that every gardener on the site has, because organic residues (dry tops, weeds, straw, etc.) often have to be burned. After that, it is better to save ash, because it is a high-quality fertilizer for many types of cultivated plants, including tomatoes.

The tomato is a plant that is very responsive to feeding. The bushes should be fertilized twice throughout the summer - in June and in the middle of the season, and this is not affected by their place of growth: be it open ground or a greenhouse.

Judging by the reviews of gardeners, dry feeding is much more effective on the growth of tomatoes than liquid feeding. Simply dust the ground around each bush to improve growth and protect against pest attacks.

Fermented Yeast Infusion

If you grow tomatoes in an apartment, then this top dressing will be most effective for them. In an apartment, tomatoes often have an underdeveloped root system, this top dressing can save the situation. Do not think that such fertilizer will work only for apartment seedlings - after such feeding, tomatoes will form the strongest root system several weeks earlier than ordinary sprouts, even in a garden bed or in a greenhouse.

To prepare such an infusion, you need to mix 10 grams of dry yeast, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 10 liters of warm water. After preparing the mixture, leave it for several hours. The resulting concentrate is diluted in a 1: 5 ratio with water and the bushes are watered. Already 3 days after applying the solution, the tomatoes will increase in size, and the leaves will thicken, acquire a bright green hue.

Iodine solution

Feeding with iodine is almost the most popular fertilization method among gardeners. It will not harm any person or plant. After applying such fertilizer, the seedlings will better tolerate the pick, they will take root well in your garden, the nitrogen metabolism of the plant will noticeably improve, the root system will develop.

To prepare a solution, dilute a glass of milk (preferably low-fat) in one liter of warm water and add 5 drops of iodine alcohol tincture there. The composition can be applied immediately after mixing. Perform the procedure early in the morning, spread the fertilizer using both root and non-root methods - alternation will have a better effect on plant growth. The main thing is not to overdo it! Apply no more than 500 ml of fertilizer using the root method, otherwise the plant will dry out. It is better to stop feeding just before the harvest.

Boric acid solution

Boron allows the plant to take all the necessary micro and macro elements from the soil. To prepare such a fertilizer, you need to dilute one gram of boric acid powder in one liter of warm water, let the solution cool and can be used.

It is best to apply the solution by the root method, but it will be useful to occasionally spray the plant with it (in small quantities). This fertilization will strengthen your seedlings, increase the number of ovaries and promote their formation.

Top dressing of tomatoes during flowering and fruit setting

To obtain a good harvest, feeding the tomatoes during flowering and fruit setting plays an important role. The quantity and quality of the fruit depends on how much the plant was provided with nutrients.

It is impossible to rashly introduce the first fertilizer that comes into the soil: the result will be the opposite of what was expected. It is necessary to accurately calculate the proportions and know what properties this or that soil has. For example, fertile black soils require significantly less fertilizers, while loam and sandy soils need them more.

Why and for what purpose are tomatoes fertilized during growth and development?

Fertilization of tomatoes is carried out at least 3-4 times per season, alternating feeding. The nutrient application interval is from 14 to 21 days, depending on the appearance of the bush and the condition of the soil. Particular attention is paid to the mineral group of substances, enriched with macro- and microelements.

The most effective top dressing for tomatoes remains produced during periods of active growth: during flowering, fruit setting. Their effect directly affects the formation of side shoots, the size and taste of tomatoes.

Without the addition of complementary foods, tomatoes sprouting even on the most fertile soil will form barren flowers, spending on their formation a large volume of distribution juice necessary for the ovary of vegetables. In addition, the size of the fruit will not reach the criteria promised by the manufacturer. Weight and diameter will be at their minimum, remaining as small as cherry blossoms during the harvest season.

Another reason for fertilizing during the flowering period is the lack of maturity of the seed. Tomatoes without an “F” mark will not be able to produce seeds for next year's cultivation. Their germination will not give anything, making the work in vain.

So, given all the above facts, you can easily answer the question: "What to feed when the tomatoes are blooming?" Of course, fertilizers containing large amounts of potassium and phosphorus.

On the other hand, many do not recommend the use of mineral fertilizers in the period 30-40 days before harvest. How to be? After all, if you do not feed the tomatoes, then the harvest may not be. The answer is simple: you need to combine natural substances containing all the necessary elements: ash, iodine, boric acid, baker's yeast and even milk.

Yeast top dressing for root watering. Dissolve 10 grams of baker's yeast in a bucket of water (10 liters), preferably fresh, but dry, add 2 tablespoons of sugar, and then leave in a warm place for 3-4 hours. Pour the prepared solution into a barrel and add 100 liters of water there, or in a liter jar add 0.9 liters of yeast solution to 9 liters of water in a 10 liter watering can and water at the root, spending 2 liters for each tomato bush.

Ash. Formed when burning branches, weeds, firewood. Contains a lot of potassium and phosphorus, as well as a whole range of essential trace elements. Feeding with ash is done as follows - 2 glasses of ash are diluted in 10 liters of water and allowed to brew for three days. Such feeding is good for calcium deficiency.

Garden, vegetable garden and flower garden tips

Boric acid... Foliar spraying is done with this substance, which prevents the ovary from falling off under unfavorable conditions for flowering. Boron is very useful for fruit setting. For its preparation, 1 g of boric acid is diluted in 1 liter of warm water. And this solution reduces the likelihood of late blight disease - 1 teaspoon is diluted in 10 liters of warm water.

Iodine. If tomatoes do not bloom well, you can fertilize with simple means. After treatment with a solution of iodine with milk, the number of set tomatoes increases. Flowering is abundant. Step by step cooking:

  • 30 drops drip in 1 liter of milk
  • pour in 1 tbsp. peroxide
  • add 9 liters of water.

With the help of an iodine solution, the ripening moment is improved. Plants are reliably protected from pests.

Dairy dressing for tomatoes. Mix 1 liter of low-fat milk with 4 liters of water and add 15-20 drops of iodine to the mixture. The ready-made solution is applied immediately, until the iodine has evaporated, irrigating the leaves of tomato bushes in the morning or in the evening.

In the open field

Caring for tomatoes and fertilizing in open ground depends on the following factors:

  • weather
  • soil condition.

For example, chernozem requires less fertilization than loamy and sandy soils. Fertilization proportions on loamy and sandy soils: for 1 sq. m scatter 40 g of superphosphate, 15 g of potassium salt, 10 g of urea. Add 10 kg of compost or humus. On chernozem soils, the proportions are reduced.

Low temperatures and rainy weather cause a nitrogen deficiency, so at this time, tomatoes are fed with nitrogen fertilizers.
